IPL for Spider Veins
IPL Laser is an emerging technology for treating spider veins.
-
Spider veins are dilated veins (capillaries) close to the surface of the skin, most often on the face or legs. They manifest as visible red, purple, or blue veins, in one of three typical patterns, with a dark center point: spider-shaped, linear, or branched (like a tree).

Spider veins often occur with Rosacea, can cover a small area of skin or a very large area of skin, and are often accompanied by burning and itching. Over 80,000,000 people in North America suffer right now from vein disorders, and approximately 8,000,000 of them are in Canada.

Erasing Spider Veins
Many people have broken capillaries or veins ( also known as broken vessels or red veins) they would like to reduce. Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments can provide an effective broken capillary and vein treatment, as well as being a solution to broken blood vessels.
Over time, little red veins on the nose, chin or cheeks become more noticeable. In addition, wavy, thin reddish-purplish veins become increasingly visible on the legs, often clustered on the thigh or below the knee.
Capillaries or facial veins will affect as many as 60% of all women and a large proportion of men. In the past, there was little you could do about broken capillaries and veins. However, Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technologies have revolutionized treatment so that capillaries and veins could be erased.
About Broken Capillaries and Veins
Broken Capillaries are enlarged blood vessels that have widened due to a weakness in the vein wall or a problem with the valves that control the flow of blood. Broken veins are the small, superficial purple or red veins stretching like a web under the skin. Overexposure to the sun is believed to contribute to the dilation of these veins, especially those found on the face.
Broken Capillaries and Vein Solutions
Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology enables the therapist to collapse the vein and broken capillary without doing any damage to the surrounding outer layers of skin. The wavelength discharged through the pulse of the laser enables the light to reach the targeted veins under the skin, whilst also improving the overall appearance of the skin by evening out skin tone and encouraging the production of collagen.
What to Expect of the Treatment for Broken Capillaries?
The IPL capillary removal treatment can take between 5- 20 minutes, depending on the surface area being targeted. Clients are given a complimentary consultation where one of our qualified therapists will give a treatment course to suit individual capillary concerns. The treatment involves simply lying on a comfortable bed while the appropriate technology is customized with pulse depths and settings. The skin is cleansed and in some cases, a local anesthetic cream is applied. During the treatment, a prickling sensation can be felt with medium-paced, concentrated pulsating beams of light. These beams of light penetrate to well below the surface layer of skin and in the epidermal layer, effectively targeting the capillary. Immediately after the treatment, redness and swelling may occur which will subside within 24 hours
Results after Treatment
Laser and IPL effectively clear most broken capillaries and veins in two to six treatments. Dramatic changes in the appearance of the vessel will occur, turning into a light red colour. Bulging may occur but any inflammation will subside within two hours. Redness in the treated vein will reduce within 1 to 5 weeks depending on it’s severity.
Why are there two technologies recommended for the treatment of broken capillaries?
It is highly recommended that facial capillaries be treated with Intense Pulsed Light as the hemoglobin in the enlarged vessel can be easily targeted. Spider veins or clusters found in the lower body require further customization in both depth and width. It is for the reason the ND:YAG laser technology is more suitable.
What are the causes of the capillaries?
Broken Capillaries are enlarged blood vessels that have widened due to a weakness in the vein wall or a problem with the valves that control the flow of blood. Overexposure to the sun is believed to contribute to the dilation of these veins, especially those found on the face.
Do Capillary and Vein treatments hurt?
Most clients describe the pulse of energy to be like the snap of a rubber band on the skin. In some cases, clients may opt to have a numbing cream applied before their treatments. After the treatment however, pain from the treatment is minimal to nonexistent.
What Results Can I Expect?
Laser vein treatment works by breaking up the veins so that they can dissolve and be absorbed by the face. This does not happen immediately and veins usually dissolve over the course of several weeks. If clients take all the necessary precautions following their treatments, a vein-disorder can be treated for long term results.
Who is a good candidate for vein treatments?
Prior to treatment, your candidacy is assessed by one of our specialists. Laser vein treatments work on those individuals who suffer from small surface blue, red, and purple broken capillaries. Vascular treatments are safe for all skin types, however this procedure is not recommended for raised veins.
Are these treatments safe?
Yes. Laser and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) systems have been used safely for millions of treatments worldwide. These systems treat only the targeted vessels, leaving the surrounding tissue intact. However, some redness may occur temporarily after the treatment.
