Six Important Things to Know about Permanent Makeup

1. How Experienced is Your Technician?

The fact that your technician has been practicing permanent makeup for say, two years, may not be very impressive if they only perform one procedure a month. Many technicians perform other services, (e.g. microdermabrasion) and only rarely perform permanent makeup. It is important for you to know that your technician has performed a significant number of effective procedures of the type that is of interest to you. That is why we prefer to use a sub-contractor like Aleksandra who is doing this work everyday.

Ask to see pictures of actual clients and get references.

2. Does Your Technician Comply with OSHA Safety Standards?

Your technician's procedure area should rival any doctor's or dentist's office. Permanent makeup procedures performed in a hair or nail salon place you at a higher risk of infection from airborne pollutants (such as acrylic nail dust which freely circulate in the air) and should be avoided.

The technician must use sterilized, or even better, single-use needles and supplies that are individually packaged and opened in front of you just before your procedure. Your technician should have on display a current certificate showing compliance with teh Ottawa Health Department.

3. Do You Understand What Chemicals Might be Deposited into Your Body?

Your technician should be able to provide you with a comprehensive list of ingredients to any colors he/she recommends. The technician should also be aware of and explain to you any known allergic reactions to specific colors they carry.

5. Does Your Technician Carry Adequate Professional Liability Insurance?

Did you know that "dissatisfaction with the makeup appearance" is far and away the number one permanent makeup complaint? A legal remedy should always be your last course of action (and if you follow these 6 points you will most likely never have to use it) however, for your protection, you should know that your technician is properly insured for coverage that specifically includes client dissatisfaction.

6. Do You Understand the True "Cost" of Permanent Makeup?

Ask yourself how much is your facial beauty worth to you? You should understand that Permanent Makeup is an invasive procedure more akin to a minor procedure that you might receive in a doctor's office (e.g. Botox injection) and not at all like a typical beauty treatment such as having your hair or nails done.

Your facial beauty is far too important. The European suggests you leave bargain hunting to when you are shopping for a dress.
